European clubs shell out for top stars

Consistent goalscorers are always highly sought after in the transfer market and this summer has certainly been no different in that respect.

Erling Braut Haaland’s £54 million move from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City could turn out to be the best piece of business conducted over the past few months.

The Norwegian striker was hugely prolific during his time in Germany and he has continued in the same vein with Pep Guardiola’s side.

Haaland has netted three goals in three appearances for City and could be the difference maker in their quest to become European champions.

City reached the semi-finals of the 2021/22 Champions League, but are strongly fancied to lift the trophy now Haaland is in their ranks.

Liverpool have also shelled out big money on a new striker, paying £67.5m to Benfica to secure the services of Darwin Nunez.

However, the jury remains out on the Uruguayan, who was sent off on his competitive Anfield debut for a headbutt on Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen.

Another top striker on the move this summer was Polish star Robert Lewandowski, who forced through a move from Bayern Munich to Barcelona.

The 34-year-old netted twice as Barcelona cruised to a 4-1 victory at Real Sociedad in their most recent outing and should score plenty of goals for the Spanish giants.

Barca’s rivals Real Madrid are responsible for the most expensive signing of the summer to date, having paid £72m to buy Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco.

The midfielder has featured in both of Madrid’s victories this season and should get plenty more chances to shine now Casemiro has left the club.

The 30-year-old has joined Manchester United after a trophy-laden spell in Spain and will be keen to help the Red Devils restore their former glories.

He will also play an integral role for Brazil as they bid to show why they are ranked as one of the top five favourites for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Other notable moves from the top 15 transfers this summer include Gabriel Jesus’ switch from Man City to Arsenal and Matthijs de Ligt joining Bayern from Juventus.

Jesus has fit seamlessly into Arsenal’s front line during the early part of the season, while De Ligt looks ideally suited to the rigours of the Bundesliga.
