Anthony Taylor's relegation to the Championship came as a result of a contentious call during the 2-2 draw between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United.

In Saturday's match, Newcastle took a 2-1 lead against Wolves at Molineux after Taylor awarded a disputed penalty. The penalty was given when Wolves' forward, Hwang Hee-chan, was judged to have fouled Fabian Schar while attempting to clear the ball from his own penalty area.

Although Hwang later scored the equalizing goal in the game, Wolves' manager, Gary O'Neil, strongly criticized the penalty decision, labeling it as "scandalous." Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, also acknowledged the controversial nature of the decision, a sentiment echoed by club legend Alan Shearer on Match of the Day.

While the PGMOL has refrained from issuing a formal apology to Wolves for the penalty call, Anthony Taylor has been excluded from officiating Premier League matches this coming weekend.

In its place, he will be overseeing a Championship match between Preston and Coventry this Saturday. This marks his return to officiating in the second tier for the first time since 2019.
