CAF has given Kenya a tough warning after multiple breaches of safety regulations staged by Kenya during clients of hosting the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) slated to be hosted in Kenya. The football governing body in the continent has threatened to move the remaining fixtures in case such breaches continue.
The Kasarani Stadium is the main CHAN venue situated at the centre of crackdown in Nairobi. As a result of inspections that have been done in the recent past, CAF has ensured stringent new standards on all home fixtures:
Stadium capacity capped at 60% — reducing allowable attendance from 48,063 to 27,000 fans.
Only electronic tickets will be accepted — eliminating the use of paper tickets to enhance crowd control and prevent counterfeiting.
This warning by CAF is being issued in the wake of warning overcrowding, match-ticket scams and safety lapses in recent matches.
Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chair, Herbert Musonye, said in a statement that CAF is dealing with all ticket sales of CHAN 2024. He also emphasized that any sales of tickets other than official such as those done within and outside the stadium are illegal.
This follows allegations which have appeared that tickets distributed by the government were outside the official CAF system and this may have led to the mismanagement of the crowd.
“We have a responsibility to ensure the safety of fans, players, and officials. Any violation of CAF’s ticketing rules will not be tolerated,” Musonye stated, warning that failure to comply could see Kenya’s remaining home matches moved to alternative venues outside the country.
